description In this paper, we study the spatial and historical construction of Gated communities located in the municipality of Santo Tomé, near the Santa Fe-Rosario freeway, Santa Fe metropolitan area (AMSF). We particularly enquire into the mechanisms of space production in relation to the regulation/deregulation of the peripheral urban edges, based on the notion of institutional expedition. We focus on the relationship between regulation and urbanization during the 1975-2003 period. The end of this period is a relevant threshold in order to understand the present consolidation of the enclave, which presents great expansion and growth. In order to carry out this investigation, we made use of qualitative methodologies, based on the analysis of documentary sources (written, graphic and hemerographic) and interviews to key informants. We conclude that, at first, some private sectors carried out urbanization projects in the urban periphery in a context of lack of regulation. During a second period, there was an institutional reinterpretation and acceptance of the model of city that these projects proposed, and regulatory actions were taken which began to legitimize the process. Moreover, during this period we can observe privatization mechanisms (material and symbolic) which operate together and contribute to a greater or lesser extent to the closing of the edge.

Moreover, during this period we can observe privatization mechanisms (material and symbolic) which operate together and contribute to a greater or lesser extent to the closing of the edge.  Este trabajo aborda la construcción espacial e histórica de los primeros barrios privados radicados en el municipio de Santo Tomé, lindantes a la autopista Santa Fe-Rosario, en el Área Metropolitana de Santa Fe (AMSF). Se indaga particularmente en los mecanismos de producción de espacio relacionados con la regulación/desregulación de los bordes periurbanos, a partir de la noción de facilitación institucional. En tal sentido, se hace foco en la relación entre normativa y urbanización en el período 1975-2003, cuya finalización supone un umbral relevante para comprender la consolidación del enclave, que presenta una gran expansión y crecimiento en la actualidad. Para llevar a cabo la investigación se recurrió a metodologías cualitativas, sustentadas en el análisis de fuentes documentales escritas, gráficas y hemerográficas y entrevistas a informantes claves. Se concluye que, en una primera instancia, algunos sectores privados llevaron a cabo proyectos de urbanización en la periferia urbana en un contexto de vacío normativo. En un segundo momento, se produjo una relectura institucional y aceptación del modelo de ciudad que proponían estos emprendimientos, y se llevaron a cabo acciones regulatorias que comenzaron a dar legitimidad al proceso. Asimismo, durante el período se observan mecanismos de privatización (materiales y simbólicos) que operan de forma conjunta y contribuyen en mayor o menor medida al cerramiento del borde.
