It should be considered as a state policy, regardless of the political thinking of succeeding governments. This article attempts to reflect on the importance of public universities, and in particular of our university after 50 years of its foundation. Proposing what their role is in the society and of all its active members, involved in teaching, research and extension tasks. Thus, university teaching contributes to the construction of critical thinking and responsible professionals. It is also essential that research tasks should carried out in our universities, contributing to the development of the region and the country, articulating the public and private sectors, from the university. And, last but not least, extension tasks, having a fundamental role in the transformation of the environment, articulating the knowledge built there with society as a whole. La educación superior gratuita y de calidad representa un elemento fundamental para el desarrollo y evolución del país. Debiendo considerarse como una política de estado, independientemente del pensamiento político de los gobiernos que se sucedan. En este artículo se intenta reflexionar respecto a la importancia de las universidades públicas, y en particular de nuestra casa de estudios tras 50 años de su fundación. Planteando cuál es su rol en la sociedad y de todos sus miembros activos, involucrados en tareas de docencia, investigación y extensión. Así, la docencia universitaria contribuye con la construcción de pensamiento crítico y profesiones responsables. Resulta fundamental, además, que en nuestras universidades se realicen tareas de investigación, las cuales contribuyen con el desarrollo de la región y el país, articulando los sectores públicos y privados, desde la universidad. Y, por último, pero no menos importante, las tareas de extensión, teniendo un rol fundamental en la transformación del entorno, articulando los conocimientos allí construidos con la sociedad en su conjunto.
