To do this, we rely on the results of two surveys that we carried out in popular neighborhoods of Mar del Plata during 2021, and fifty interviews with residents of these same areas, who were questioned about different aspects of the security situation and the relationship with the police in their everyday experience. In line with the research results on Latin America, it is observed that there are relatively high levels of disapproval of the police service. This goes hand in hand with a moderate feeling of vulnerability. At the same time, there is a high demand for police presence, and for police action that meets the expectations of the population. But since neither this demand nor these expectations are satisfied, negative judgments tend to be made about the institution and its agents. This is not incompatible with the idea that the police have cultural, legal, budgetary, and political constraints to act as they should. El objetivo de este artículo es determinar de qué manera los ciudadanos evalúan a la institución policial, y en particular el desempeño funcional y la actividad concreta de los agentes policiales, en el marco de sus experiencias cotidianas. Para ello nos apoyamos en los resultados de dos encuestas que realizamos en barrios populares de Mar del Plata durante 2021, y de medio centenar de entrevistas con pobladores de estos mismos  barrios, que fueron interrogados sobre distintos aspectos de la situación de seguridad y la relación con la policía en su experiencia cotidiana. En consonancia con los resultados de investigación sobre América Latina, se observa que existen niveles relativamente altos de desaprobación del servicio policial. Esto va de la mano con un moderado sentimiento de desprotección. Paralelamente, existe una alta demanda de presencia policial, y de una actuación policial que se ajuste a las expectativas de la población. Pero como ni esta demanda ni estas expectativas son satisfechas, tienen a producirse juicios negativos sobre la institución y sus agentes. Esto no es incompatible con la idea de que la policía tiene limitaciones culturales, legales, presupuestarias y políticas para actuar como debería.
