There is not, for Parmenides, a midway between "truth" and "opinions". Up to the end of XIXth century, all interpretations of Parmenides' philosophy respected this principle. A wrong conjecture proposed to complete a truncated verse (the verse 6.3), consecrated for H. Diels in 1882, gave erroneously the idea that, besides the way of truth, it would be possible to admit two false ways, and, in this case, the ways of inquiry would be "three". A simple reject of the conjecture of Diels shows that this virtual "third" way does not exist. Para Parménides la filosofía es un camino que conduce a la comprensión del sentido primario y fundamental del hecho de ser. La verdad (alétheia) consiste en captar qué significa afirmar que "se es". Relativizar o ignorar este valor absoluto del hecho de ser conduce a la formulación de "opiniones" (doxai) erróneas. Parménides no admite un término medio entre ambas posibilidades. Hasta fines del siglo XIX, todos los intérpretes (filósofos o comentadores) respetaron este principio. Una conjetura propuesta para completar un verso trunco (el verso 6.3), oficializada por H. Diels en 1882, dio a entender que, junto al camino de la verdad, podrían existir dos caminos erróneos, y en ese caso Parménides habría tenido en cuenta "tres vías de investigación". Un rechazo puro y simple de la conjetura de Diels muestra la inexistencia de esta tercera vía.
