description Lithium has become a resource in great international demand in recent decades. It is estimated that in the so-called "lithium triangle" made up of the countries of the Southern Cone: Bolivia, Chile and Argentina, there are reserves equivalent to 85% of those existing on the planet, which positions these states in the attractive lithium market for more than two decades. The purpose of this article is to characterize the lithium policy in the province of Catamarca, Argentina, and the existing tensions in relation to its exploitation with actors of society and with the projection of problems in the relationship: politics-nature. The extraction of lithium in the Salar del Hombre Muerto dating back to 1997, to the present day, is analyzed. The role of the provincial government, the development of corporations and social resistance are examined from the divergent assessments and positions against this extractivist activity that reproduces the logic of Maldevelopment. The defense of water has become the foundation of social resistance to mining extractivism and Catamarca is no exception, for which the contributions of the Political Ecology of Water and categories will be considered as theoretical approaches that allow problematizing one of the elements in dispute: the valuation of water resources. In this line, the contributions of studies on mining extractivism, environmental conflicts, poor development and an introduction to the hydrosocial cycle are integrated, as theoretical approaches that allow problematizing one of the central elements in dispute: the protection of water.

El litio se ha convertido en un recurso de gran demanda internacional en las últimas décadas. Se estima que en el denominado “triángulo del litio” conformado por los países del Cono Sur: Bolivia, Chile y Argentina se encuentran reservas equivalentes al 85% de las existentes en el planeta, lo que posiciona a estos estados en el atractivo mercado del litio desde hace más de dos décadas. El presente artículo tiene por objeto caracterizar la política del litio en la provincia de Catamarca, Argentina, por un lado y, las tensiones existentes en relación a su explotación con actores de la sociedad y con la proyección de problemáticas en la relación política-naturaleza. Se analiza la extracción de litio en el Salar del Hombre Muerto que se remonta a 1997, hasta nuestros días. Se examina el rol del gobierno provincial, el desenvolvimiento de las corporaciones y las resistencias sociales a partir de las divergentes valoraciones y posturas frente a esta actividad extractivista que reproduce la lógica de Maldesarrollo. La defensa del agua se ha convertido en el fundamento de las resistencias sociales al extractivismo minero y Catamarca no es la excepción, por lo cual serán considerados los aportes de la Ecología Política del Agua y categorías como aproximaciones teóricas que permitan problematizar uno de los elementos en disputa: la valoración del recurso hídrico. En esa línea se integran los contribuciones de los estudios sobre extractivismos mineros, conflictos ambientales, maldesarrollo y una introducción al ciclo hidrosocial, como aproximaciones teóricas que permitan problematizar uno de los elementos centrales en disputa: la protección del agua.
