The analysis by contrast with other intentional experiences leads to characterizing phantasy as an inactual kind of reproductive modification or, more precisely, as “the neutrality modification of the ‘positing’ re-presentation” (Ideas I, § 111). Nevertheless, it may be objected that defining phantasy as a kind of indeterminate memory restricts its creative and free possibilities. Therefore, to account for a more adequate definition, the analysis must extend beyond the fundamental question of whether to believe or not to believe, and affirm both phantasy’s inactuality and quasi-productivity.
