Noam Chomsky (who has probably been the most acclaimed linguist in history) assumes, wrongly, that there are crucial contrastations in science. If a hypothesis belonging to theory x is confirmed, we are not allowed to discard theory z, which is incompatible with x (and vice versa). A “principle of complementarity in linguistics” will be proposed as an alternative. On the basis of such a principle, it could be possible to accept that certain linguistic theory z is scientific if such theory accounts for linguistic phenomena, even in the case of being incompatible with Chomskyan theory. |
