The objective of this paper is to carry out a theoretical approach to transnational education as a dimension of university internationalization. Both the stated objective and the methodology, together with other research techniques, allow us to state as main results that transnational education is a dynamic component within the internationalization of higher education and for them it is supported by forms such as: distance education, locally supported distance learning, twin programmes, articulated programmes, local branches of foreign institutions and franchise agreements, thus contributing to a more proactive internationalization of higher education. In conclusion, it is stated that the internationalization of higher education offers dissimilar opportunities, however its transnationalization presents some weaknesses. Con el devenir histórico el concepto internacionalización migró de las ciencias políticas y las relaciones internacionales a los escenarios universitarios en los años 80 del siglo pasado, extrapolándose luego a la cooperación internacional universitaria. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo, realizar un abordaje teórico de la educación transnacional como dimensión de la internacionalización universitaria. Tanto el objetivo planteado como la metodología, unida a otras técnicas de investigación permiten plantear como principales resultados, que la educación transnacional es un componente dinamizador dentro de la internacionalización de la educación superior y para ellos se apoya en formas como: educación a distancia, educación a distancia apoyada localmente, programas gemelos, programas articulados, sedes locales de instituciones extranjeras y acuerdos de franquicia, contribuyendo así a una internacionalización de la educación superior más proactiva. Como conclusión se plantea que la internacionalización de la educación superior brinda disímiles oportunidades, sin embargo su transnacionalización presenta algunas debilidades.
