Prosodic subminimality on English particles? The case of on

In this paper we present a preliminary acoustic study using Praat (Boersma & Weenink 2019) on the English adverbial particle on, which participates in the so-called phrasal and prepositional verbs (Quirk & Greenbaum 1973, Quirk et al. 1985). The aim is to gather acoustic evidence tha...

description In this paper we present a preliminary acoustic study using Praat (Boersma & Weenink 2019) on the English adverbial particle on, which participates in the so-called phrasal and prepositional verbs (Quirk & Greenbaum 1973, Quirk et al. 1985). The aim is to gather acoustic evidence that will allow us to characterize this particle in order to determine whether it features the expected properties of a functional or lexical item. For this purpose, the production of the particle in three different stimuli by nine native speakers of English was analyzed and values such as F1, F2 and vowel duration of the particle were recorded. The results obtained are in principle consistent with a hypothesis according to which this type of particles has a functional nature and, therefore, does not have prosodic word status, so these particles would be prosodically subminimal elements. This can be formalized within models dealing with subminimal functional words and their relationship to the prosodic/phonological word (Nespor & Vogel 1986, Selkirk 1996).
