description This article presents some of the results of a study carried out in the indigenous Tikuna community of Umariaçu (Brazil). This research sought to describe the mathematical notions perceivable in Tikuna weaving, specifically in the baskets and mats woven by women, and to show that methodological strategies for the teaching of mathematics in indigenous-community schools could be derived from everyday objects present in the indigenous culture. To attain this objective it was not enough to know mathematics; it was necessary to see in the forms of the fabric and in its process of creation the mathematical notions and ideas related to the contents taught in indigenous schools. It was also necessary to live with the women, get to know their wishes, walk with them to their agroforestry plots, learn to knit, and gain their trust, so as to discern the meanings of this work and its products for the women of the community.
