description |
Every discourse has an aesthetic dimension as well as a particular composition that varies according to the discursive type, which can be analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective. This work focuses on the visual discourse of a traditional Mayan dress, made and worn by women of the Yucatan Peninsula, and known in Spanish as the “hipil.” Fabricated from cotton cloth and embroidered around the neckline and the bottom edge with different motifs such as flowers, leaves, animals, branches and frets, the complex interlacing of images constitutes a particular code that holds different meanings for the wearer and the viewer. In this study I will analyze the garments that are worn in the sociocultural context of Los Chenes (Campeche). |
