We print here an unpublished letter of Samuel Fritz, a German-born Jesuit missionary, who worked in the Upper Amazon region from the end of the 17th Century to the beginning of the 18th Century. This letter was written by demand from his hierarchical superiors in 1721, after he had left the region, against his will, under the pressure of the Portuguese. There is no doubt that the report contained in the letter was requested due to the importance of his testimony in the border disputes of that time, and perhaps because of this, it was not published in the Diario de Samuel Fritz (1889), where all his letters and reports were collected. We include here the facsimile of the original letter, together with its transcription and an introduction by Jean Pierre Goulard. |
