description The purpose of this article is to analyze the socialand historical development of the PentecostalMethodist Church of Chile (imp) andthe Pentecostal Evangelical Church (iep); representativesof the Chilean Pentecostal movement(1909 – 1973). We consulted primarysources corresponding to the magazines publishedby the movement since 1909. Froman epistemic standpoint, the social legitimacytheory of Max Weber helped to explainthe origin and development of Chilean Pentecostalismand how this was a religious movementof charismatic legitimacy that evolvedand became an institution in Chilean society.Around 1932, once the movement had establisheditself, the Pentecostal charisma enteredinto a routinization phase, generating itsfirst schism. A faction of the movement becameindependent to form the iep and introducea government system of traditional legitimacy.However, the main core of the imp kept acharismatic model. Despite this, both factionshad to face constant internal tensions betweencharismatic and the traditional models, whichled to the formation of new autonomously organizedgroups.
