O autor segue o modelo de análise desenvolvido por Weber na obra clássica da Sociologia A ética protestante e o espírito do capitalismo para investigar a ética do trabalho dos hackers informáticos. Himanen afirma que os hackers, mais do que possuírem valores diferentes daqueles dos protestantes, representam uma oposição à moral da era industrial em diversos sentidos. Segundo o autor, seu trabalho aborda um fato social de índole geral que põe em juízo a ética protestante do trabalho que, há muito tempo, vem regendo a vida dos indivíduos e ainda exerce uma poderosa influência sobre as pessoas. A natureza radical do hackerismo consiste em sua proposta de um espírito alternativo para a sociedade-rede, um espírito que finalmente questiona a ética protestante.
