The explanatory talk produced in storybook reading and play situations with 30-month-old children and their caregivers was analyzed. Participants lived in middle income argentinean homes in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The explanatory discourse units were analyzed according to the type of explanation, who initiated and produced them, and their level of distance from the immediate environment of the situation. The results showed that in both activity contexts, participants produced different types of explanations, primarily initiated by the mother. During play, children independently produced more explanations (vs. storybook reading). In these situations, there was also a tendency towards a predominance of high-level explanations that contributed to the use of non-immediate speech of high relevance for children's cognitive and socio-emotional development. Taken together, the study findings provide additional evidence about the relevance of early childhood experiences at home for discursive development, and contribute to account for the specificity of the two activity contexts considered to promote the development of explanatory discourse. El presente trabajo se propone contribuir al estudio de la adquisición de la explicación como forma de discurso extendido en la infancia. Se analizó comparativamente el habla explicativa producida en situaciones de lectura de cuento y de juego con 12 niños de 30 meses de edad y sus cuidadores, residentes en hogares de sectores medios de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Las unidades explicativas identificadas (256) fueron analizadas según el tipo de explicación, quién las iniciaba y producía, y su nivel de distanciamiento respecto del contexto físico inmediato. Los resultados pusieron de manifiesto que, en ambos contextos de actividad, los participantes produjeron distintos tipos de explicaciones, en su mayoría, iniciadas por la madre. Durante el juego, los niños produjeron más explicaciones de manera independiente. En estas situaciones también se registró una tendencia hacia un predominio de explicaciones de nivel alto que contribuyen al uso de habla no inmediata de gran relevancia para el desarrollo cognitivo y socioemocional infantil. En conjunto, los hallazgos del estudio proporcionan evidencia adicional acerca de la importancia de las experiencias infantiles tempranas en el hogar para el desarrollo discursivo y contribuyen a dar cuenta de la especificidad de los contextos de actividad considerados para promover el desarrollo del discurso explicativo.
