In this paper we will recover the prelude of that contest that also took place between writings, both in the pastorals of the Curia and in the press of the Unión Nacional del Magisterio. Analyzing these disputes will allow us to question the supposedly unforeseen nature of the attack and to recognize the political meanings that each group attached to the orientation of primary education and secularism during the confrontation. La Pastoral Colectiva del Episcopado de Uruguay publicada en marzo del año 1940 operó como un fuerte embate a la Escuela laica y, a su vez, al magisterio. En este trabajo recuperaremos la antesala de aquella contienda que también tuvo lugar entre escrituras, tanto en las pastorales de la curia como en el órgano de prensa de la Unión Nacional del Magisterio. Analizar estas disputas nos permitirá cuestionar el supuesto carácter imprevisto del embate y reconocer los sentidos políticos que cada grupo le adosó a la orientación de la enseñanza primaria y a la laicidad durante el enfrentamiento. A Coletiva Pastoral do Episcopado do Uruguai, publicada em março de 1940, foi um forte ataque à escola leiga e, por sua vez, à profissão docente. Neste artigo, recuperaremos o prelúdio desse conflito que também ocorreu entre escritos, tanto na pastoral da cúria quanto no órgão de imprensa da Unión Nacional del Magisterio (União Nacional do Magistério). A análise destas disputas permitir-nos-á questionar o carácter supostamente imprevisto do ataque e reconhecer os significados políticos que cada grupo atribuiu à orientação do ensino primário e ao laicismo durante o confronto.
