The current validity of the Genevan´s work originates in the fact that he placed at the centre of the historical stage the great issues that have inhabited Modern Age. The mainstay on which his social and political thought rests is his powerful appeal to equality. However, the radicality in his concept of equality ceases before women. At that point, the rousseaunian proposition of equality sinks and the radical thinker becomes one of the founders of Modern Patriarchy. El siglo XVIII puede ser leído de muchas formas, pero ninguna de las miradas que hacen legible ese momento histórico puede prescindir del pensamiento de Jean-Jacques Rousseau. La actualidad de la obra del ginebrino se origina en que situó en el centro del escenario histórico los grandes problemas que han habitado la Modernidad. La columna vertebral sobre la que reposa su pensamiento social y político es su poderosa apelación a la igualdad. Sin embargo, la radicalidad de su concepto de igualdad se detiene ante las mujeres. Ahí la propuesta rousseauniana de igualdad naufraga y el pensador radical se convierte en uno de los fundadores del patriarcado moderno.
