This historical review exercise about the training of doctors during the Viceroyalty aims to put in tension the Eurocentric gaze proposed by widely circulated texts, such as the manual by José Cosmelli Ibañez, and a critical perspective inscribed in the decolonial tradition. En el presente artículo nos proponemos reconstruir la imagen que gran parte de la bibliografía del siglo XX compuso acerca de la configuración de los saberes médicos en la etapa del Virreinato del Río de la Plata y ponderar cómo estos gravitaron en delinear los contenidos curriculares del Protomedicato, subrayando como de manera concurrente se invisibiliza los conocimientos que acerca de la salud tenían los pueblos originarios de América o eran portadores los negros y negras arrancados de África y transformados en esclavizados en estas latitudes.  Este ejercicio de repaso histórico acerca de la formación de los médicos en el ámbito virreinal, se propone entonces poner en tensión la mirada eurocéntrica propuesta por textos de amplia circulación, como por ejemplo el manual de José Cosmelli Ibañez, y una perspectiva crítica inscripta en la tradición decolonial.
