The intraoperative complications detected and the strategies used to solve them are also described. Over 929 neutering performed in the period 2014/2015, the most common complications were uterine contents (pyometra, mucometra, hematometra and pregnancy). It is concluded that due to the inconveniences generated by intraoperative complications in the development of the surgical protocol and in the possible deviations in the expected results, the professionals that make up the surgical team must have the necessary skills and experience to solve them quickly, without compromising the animal welfare. En este artículo se describe el protocolo quirúrgico que llevó a cabo un equipo de profesionales de la Cátedra de Cirugía de la Facultad de Ciencias Veterinarias de Casilda (Universidad Nacional de Rosario) para realizar castraciones masivas en perras y gatas utilizando como vía de abordaje la flancotomía; se reportan las complicaciones intraoperatorias halladas y se detallan las estrategias que se utilizaron para resolverlas.En un total de 929 castraciones realizadas en el período 2014-2015, se constató que las complicaciones más frecuentes fueron úteros con contenido (piometras, mucómetras, hemómetras y preñez). Se concluye que, debido a los inconvenientes que generan las complicaciones intraquirúrgicas en el desarrollo del protocolo quirúrgico y en los posibles desvíos en los resultados esperados, los profesionales que integran el equipo quirúrgico deben contar con las competencias necesarias y la experiencia suficiente para solucionarlas con presteza, sin poner en riesgo el bienestar animal.
