In the context of censorship, repression and strict control of educational institutions imposed by the last dictatorship, study groups and private research centers became alternative knowledge production spaces to the homogeneous and authoritarian discourse of the de facto regime. From the perspective of intellectual history, the practices and material conditions in which PEHESA developed its work are analyzed. Likewise, the article identify the themes, approaches, theoretical references and research of the group that were the foundations for the development of a historiographical line that acquired a central place during the university reorganization promoted in 1984 with the return of democracy. El artículo presenta un estudio sobre la creación y primeros años del Programa de Estudios de Historia Económica y Social Americana (PEHESA), impulsado en 1977 por un grupo de historiadores con el propósito de continuar la Historia Social iniciada por José Luis Romero. En el contexto de censura, represión y estricto control de las instituciones educativas impuestos por la última dictadura, los grupos de estudio y centros de investigación privados se constituyeron en espacios de producción de conocimiento alternativos al discurso homogéneo y autoritario del régimen de facto. Desde la perspectiva de la historia intelectual, se analizan las prácticas y condiciones materiales en las que el PEHESA desarrolló su trabajo. Se identifican, asimismo, los temas, enfoques, referencias teóricas e investigaciones del grupo que sentaron las bases para el desarrollo de una línea historiográfica que adquirió un lugar central durante el reordenamiento universitario promovido en 1984 con el retorno de la democracia.
