In order to do so, it focuses on Paradiplomacy as a concept, middle-range theory and field of study within International Relations; identifies its methodological weaknesses and revisits several conceptualizations that have contributed to its object of study. It argues that despite its critics and marginality within IR, Paradiplomacy has tackled the phenomenon from a satisfactory theoretical perspective; yet it should introduce new research techniques in order to overcome some of its main methodological weaknesses. In that regard, the article concludes with some basic ideas and suggestions. El artículo se propone sistematizar desde una perspectiva teórica los factores externos y domésticos que impulsan las relaciones internacionales de los gobiernos no-centrales. Para ello se centra en la Paradiplomacia como concepto, teoría de alcance medio y campo de estudio de las Relaciones Internacionales; se señalan sus debilidades metodológicas y revisitan algunas de las principales conceptualizaciones que desde una literatura multidisciplinaria han aportado a su objeto de estudio. Se argumenta que a pesar de ser blanco de críticas y de una marginalidad relativa dentro de las Relaciones Internacionales, la Paradiplomacia ha logrado comprehender teóricamente el fenómeno, aunque al mismo tiempo debe introducir nuevas técnicas de investigación para subsanar algunas de sus principales debilidades metodológicas. Al respecto, se ofrecen orientaciones en las conclusiones del trabajo.
