It provided a prestigious link with \the cradle of civilization" and helped European nation-states to regard themselves as the most accomplished and successful achievements of progress and modernity, thus tracing an interrupted lineage from antiquity until contemporary times. However, the decline of the West, the increasing dynamism of East Asia and a disturbing feeling of uncertainty about the future mean that Humanities face a deep questioning of their cultural role and of their value as tools capable to build social bounds and identities in a changing world. Egyptology is not alien to these challenges, so the recent renewal of some of its methods and perspectives of research should be followed by a greater collaboration with social sciences. Only in this way it may provide useful comparative insights as well as deep historical perspectives about the dynamics of human societies and, in doing so, find definitively a firm place in the construction of non-Eurocentric social sciences. Tradicionalmente la Egiptología ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en la construcción de la moderna identidad occidental. Esto es así porque proporcionaba un vínculo prestigioso con "a cuna de la civilización" y contribuía a que los estados nación europeos interpretasen su propio devenir histórico como el resultado más perfecto y triunfante del progreso y del acceso a la modernidad, ayudando de este modo a establecer un vínculo interrumpido entre la antigüedad y el mundo contemporáneo. Sin embargo, el declive de Occidente, el creciente dinamismo de Asia oriental y el sentimiento angustioso de incertidumbre sobre el futuro implican un profundo cuestionamiento del papel cultural de las Humanidades, asá como de su valor como herramientas susceptibles de construir vínculos sociales e identidades en un mundo en mutación. La Egiptología no permanece ajena a tales desafíos, de ahí que la reciente renovación de algunos de sus métodos y perspectivas de investigación también deba ir acompañada de una mayor colaboración con las ciencias sociales. Sólo de este modo podría proporcionar enfoques comparativos estimulantes así como perspectivas históricas en profundidad acerca de las dinámicas que afectan a las sociedades humanas. Es de esperar que con tales contribuciones la Egiptología sepa encontrar definitivamente un lugar firme en la construcción de unas ciencias sociales no eurocéntricas.
