A Story of Fragile and Unstable Alliances. The Amorite Kingdoms Facing the Threat of Elam during the Reign of Zimri-Lim of Mari.

In this paper we will review the history of the kingdom of Mari (present-day Tell-Hariri, Syria) during the reign of Zimri-Lim (ca. 1775-1762 BC) with an emphasis on the question of international relations in the near-eastern scene at that time. Specifically, the main objective is to reconstruct the...

Specifically, the main objective is to reconstruct the middle years of Zimri-Lim's reign through particular scenes throughout the historical process, based on the perspectives and experiences of the generals and soldiers who travelled and lived between the various kingdoms. We will focus on the heyday of the last king of Mari’s rule, which extends from the sixth year of his reign to the time of Elam's attempted invasion of Babylonia (ZL 11). This period will be dealt with mainly through a selection of letters from commanders of the main contingents of troops sent from the kingdom of Mari to Babylonia, to which we will add a small selection of letters sent by other officials and diplomatic envoys on mission. Throughout the paper, we will seek to highlight the instability of the political chessboard of the time, which was criss-crossed by alliances that were woven and unwoven with surprising ease and pace. Finally, we will address the question of the Elamite threat to the Amorite kingdoms as a turning point in the analysed political situation.
