It will also provide elements to demonstrate that the scale of the city is a relevant factor in the analysis. Indeed, the article argues that in medium-sized cities –where there are no significant objective distances between the living and working places of the marginalized and the integrated population– social interactions are more frequent and personalized. The hypothesis to be tested is that although proximity facilitates and make such interactions commonplace it also reinforces daily the regime of inequality that governs them. Thus, the mutual knowledge derived from this proximity operates both as a driving force and as the main conditioner of the relationships of a triad –trapitos, neighbors and the State– that seems to participate in a game with no way out. Following the symbolic interactionism approach and relational theories of inequality, the article presents the results of a qualitative fieldwork carried out in the city of Santa Fe, through interviews, ethnographic observations and collaborative production. Dentro de la diversidad de oficios informales y marginales que se despliegan en el espacio público de las ciudades contemporáneas, este artículo analiza las prácticas de quienes procuran obtener dinero cuidando y lavando vehículos en áreas de centralidad –conocidos popularmente como trapitos– poniendo el foco en sus interacciones cotidianas con los vecinos, entre ellos y con el Estado. Asimismo, se propone aportar elementos para demostrar que la escala de la ciudad es un factor relevante en dicho análisis. En efecto, se sostiene que en las ciudades de tamaño intermedio –donde no existen distancias objetivas significativas entre los lugares de vida y de trabajo de la población marginalizada y la integrada– los intercambios son más frecuentes y personalizados. La hipótesis a contrastar plantea que si bien la cercanía torna habituales dichas interacciones –y en ese sentido las facilita– también genera un reforzamiento cotidiano del régimen de desigualdad que las gobierna. Así, el conocimiento mutuo derivado de esa proximidad funciona a la vez como motor y como principal condicionante de las relaciones de una tríada –trapitos, residentes y Estado– que parece participar de un juego sin escapatoria. Orientado según el enfoque del interaccionismo simbólico y de las teorías relacionales de la desigualdad, el artículo presenta resultados de un trabajo de campo cualitativo realizado en la ciudad de Santa Fe, con entrevistas, observaciones de corte etnográfico y producción colaborativa de recursos visuales.
