During the Cold War and the years after the Reunification, this country was an ‘economic giant, political dwarf’. Nevertheless, Angela Merkel arrival in office in 2005 represented an increase in the German incidence in the international scenario. In any case, the foreign policy of the Chancellor has not meant a break with her past, but its traditional guidelines have been preserved. According to this, the following article will seek to account for those changes in the continuity of Germany's foreign policy, as well as the main challenges that it has had to face from 2005 to date. La política exterior de Alemania se ha caracterizado desde la fundación de la República Federal en 1949 por su bajo perfil, su marcado multilateralismo y la promoción y defensa de valores europeos-liberales. En términos diplomáticos, durante la Guerra Fría y los años posteriores a la Reunificación, dicho país era un ‘enano político, un gigante económico’. Sin embargo, la llegada al poder de Angela Merkel en 2005 representó un aumento de la incidencia alemana en el escenario internacional, al posicionar al país como un actor clave en términos regional y global. De todos modos, la política exterior de la canciller no ha significado un quiebre con su pasado, sino que se han preservado sus lineamientos tradicionales. Ante ello, en el siguiente artículo se buscará dar cuenta de aquellos cambios en la continuidad de la política exterior de Alemania, como así también los principales desafíos que ha debido afrontar desde 2005 a la fecha.
