What these texts suggest, rather than the obsolescence of a hitherto known fact, is the decline of a previously assumed transparency: that of the nature of the readership and the motivations behind the act of reading. Protected from their own heterogeneity by the hegemony of humanistic discourse, these came to the foreground in the process of the omnivorous expansion of the cultural industry, and the social transformations that characterized the decade of Peronism (1946-55). Drawing on the analysis of the Sociología del público argentino by Adolfo Prieto (1956), this article illustrates the way in which inquiry into the nature of the public attempted to render intelligible the increasingly undifferentiated literary sphere, especially to a new generation of intellectuals who were attempting to redefine the political dimensions of literature. Durante los años ’50, una serie de intervenciones de diverso tipo afirmaron con perplejidad variable que la realidad del público argentino y la figura misma del lector se habían vuelto un misterio. Más que la obsolescencia de un saber exacto, lo que indican estos textos es la caída de un presupuesto de transparencia: la vocación del lector y las motivaciones del acto de lectura, protegidas de su propia realidad multiforme por la hegemonía del discurso humanista, emergían a primer plano en la expansión omnívora de la industria cultural y las transformaciones sociales de la década peronista (19546-55). Centrado en el análisis de la Sociología del público argentino de Adolfo Prieto (1956), este artículo intenta mostrar de qué modo la indagación sobre el público aspiró a volver inteligible, en particular para una nueva generación intelectual que intentaba redefinir la dimensión política de la literatura, el espacio crecientemente indiferenciado en que ella debía actuar.
