The narrative poem rewrites classical sources that deal with the passage in the state government from kings to consuls in the context of the English Renaissance as the expression of the secularising and anthropocentric Early Modernity. This transition is artistically correlated. The protagonist is first the object of a language that idealises her, responsible for the sexual violence that victimises her. Such language is replaced by one which acknowledges her material beauty due to the presence of desire. This desire, however, is not subject to reflection and does not relate her beautiful features to an individuality with its own will. From the painful experience of rape, Lucrece tries to forsake her condition as an object and attempts to become a subject. This process is possible at the artistic level of poetry, though it does not unfold onto the public sphere because the emerging political regime reduces her pain to a private instance and does not allot some social space for her to undergo her period of mourning, which triggers the tragic denouement. La violación de Lucrecia habilita una lectura política y literaria en clave de género. El poema narrativo reescribe las fuentes clásicas que abordan el pasaje del gobierno de reyes al gobierno de cónsules en el contexto del Renacimiento inglés como expresión de la Modernidad temprana, de tendencias secularizadoras y antropocéntricas. Esta transición política tiene su correlato artístico. La protagonista es objeto de un lenguaje que la idealiza, responsable de la violencia sexual de la que es víctima. Dicho lenguaje se reemplaza por otro que reconoce la materialidad de su belleza a partir de la presencia del deseo. Tal deseo, sin embargo, no admite observación reflexiva que ligue lo bello a una individualidad con voluntad propia, por lo que se la objetiva nuevamente. Luego de la experiencia dolorosa de la violación, Lucrecia intenta subjetivarse. El proceso se concreta en el plano de la poesía aunque no en la esfera pública dado que el régimen político emergente reduce su dolor al ámbito privado y no le asigna un espacio social para elaborar su duelo, lo cual deviene en tragedia.
