The wide territory that it occupies in social world and the different shapes which it adopts in human culture explain the plurality of approaches that have addressed the subject in the last decades. Such approaches have tried to defend fiction, facing the “doctrine of panfictionality”–as Ryan called it–, which tends to widen the concept of fiction so that it nearly gets assimilated to reality. This paper seeks to synthesize the principal aspects of the current debate on fiction. Firstly, we develop a critic review of “panfictionalism”, analyzing the ethical-political implications of erasing the boundaries between fiction and reality. Secondly, we consider the main approaches to fiction prevailing in the current state of the matter. We will see that fiction, as a complex and multidimensional problem, demands a politics of theory which transcends the critics of its social uses and which connects in a productive way with literary theory. La ficción es un fenómeno complejo y multiforme. La vastedad del territorio que ocupa en el mundo social y la diversidad de formas que adopta en la cultura humana explican, en parte, la multiplicidad de reflexiones de las que ha sido objeto el fenómeno en las últimas décadas. Tales reflexiones han procurado defender las fronteras de la ficción frente a los enfoques “panficcionalistas” –como los denominó Ryan–, que tienden a ensanchar el concepto de ficción a un punto tal de asimilarlo con el de realidad. El presente trabajo busca sintetizar los aspectos principales del debate actual sobre la ficción. En primer lugar, esbozaremos una crítica al “panficcionalismo”, atendiendo a las implicancias ético-políticas del borramiento de los límites entre ficción y realidad. En segundo lugar, consideraremos las principales perspectivas sobre la ficción vigentes en el actual estado del arte. Veremos que la ficción, en tanto problema complejo y multidimensional, exige una política de la teoría que trascienda la crítica de sus usos sociales y que, al explorar los interrogantes vinculados a su definición, dialoga de manera fructífera con la teoría literaria.
