Mozambique: a democratic regime or hybrid regime?

We seek to understand how the implementation of hybrid regimes can explain the reverse wave of democratization processes on the African continent and whether Mozambique would fit into this type of regime. If several studies point to the generalized decline of democracy in the world, wouldn’t Mozambi...

If several studies point to the generalized decline of democracy in the world, wouldn’t Mozambique be living in its “Mozambican times of the world”? The text aims to analyse the transition from democratic regimes (a wave that began in the 90s) to hybrid regimes, seeking to understand Mozambique’s position in the process. Our conclusion is that it is difficult to classify the country as a hybrid regime. To do this, it would be necessary to understand all the premises that shape this type of regime and seek experiences from countries that have gone through similar situations and, from there, carry out a comparative analysis. We would have to ask ourselves how these experiences influence the democracy that Mozambique intends to build. The analysis is based on the main literature that focuses on this topic.
