Una radiografía de la escalada de tensiones entre Estados Unidos e Irán a inicios del 2020 Bettati, Martín Iran United States Soleimani International Politics Security Irán Estados Unidos Soleimani Política Internacional Seguridad On January 3rd 2020, the United States (US) decided to carry out a drone strike in Baghdad’s International Airport to kill general Qassem Soleimani, in this strike the Deputy Chief of the Popular Mobilization Forces of Iraq was also assassinated. This act was an escalation of the tensions between the US and Iran and had significant repercussions not only at a regional level, but also at an international one, accumulating also criticism in the US. With the objective to analyse the recent escalation of tensions, aiming to answer what happened and why, this article describes the facts and the context in which they took place. It, then, puts forward five theses explaining the US decision as well as one concerning the Iranian retaliation. This work utilizes mainly journalist sources and extends the time frame of analysis from the mid of 2018 to February 2020. El 3 de enero de 2020 Estados Unidos (EE.UU.) llevó adelante un ataque aéreo en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Bagdad con el objetivo de asesinar al general Qassem Soleimani, en el cual también murió el subcomandante de las Fuerzas de Movilización Populares de Irak. Este acto generó una escalada de las tensiones entre EE.UU. e Irán y tuvo fuertes repercusiones a nivel regional e internacional, a la vez que fue cuestionado en el plano doméstico. Con el objetivo de analizar la escalada, buscando responder a qué pasó y por qué, este artículo describe los hechos y el contexto en el que se enmarcaron. Luego, expone cinco tesis explicativas de la decisión de EE.UU. de efectuar la operación, así como una de la represalia de Irán. El presente trabajo utiliza principalmente fuentes periodísticas y extiende el período de análisis desde mediados de 2018 a febrero de 2020.
