Using a qualitative research design based on the analysis of narratives from an interpretative biographical framework, the research traced those imaginary meanings that convey and shape social imaginaries about death. To this end, we delved into the experiences of older people around five axes: spiritual and religious beliefs; desired death; bodily destiny; communication about death and the dead; and communication between the living and the dead. In other words, it offers a synthesis of the analysis carried out on each axis, showing how they form part of the social imaginaries about death in old age. The contribution is based on the contribution to knowledge about the broad field of studies on death and dying. Este artículo expone los resultados de una investigación sobre la construcción social de la muerte mediante un diálogo interdisciplinario con aportes de las ciencias sociales y humanas. A partir de un diseño de investigación cualitativa basado en el análisis de relatos desde un marco biográfico interpretativo, la investigación rastreó aquellas significaciones imaginarias que vehiculizan y configuran los imaginarios sociales sobre la muerte. Para ello, se profundizó en experiencias de personas mayores en torno a cinco ejes: las creencias espirituales y religiosas; la muerte deseada; el destino corporal; la comunicación sobre la muerte y los muertos; y la comunicación entre vivos y muertos. Es decir, se ofrece una síntesis del análisis realizado sobre cada eje, evidenciando cómo hacen parte de los imaginarios sociales acerca de la muerte en la vejez. La contribución se fundamenta en el aporte al conocimiento en torno al amplio campo de estudios sobre la muerte y el morir.
