The target of this essay is to problematize the link between cultural policies for theatre and its audiences. To reach this goal, we analyze the composition, between 2006 and 2019, of the audiences of the Teatro Nacional Cervantes (TNC). The description of the audience development models implemented in Latin America (Vergara, 2019), the analysis of the main trends in cultural consumption as well as the data on theater audiencies in our country allows us to compare two different administrations of the TNC and to characterize the work of the Gestión de Públicos area, unprecedented in our country. We discovered that the first studied period embraced one of the guidelines proposed by the model of audiences education, its expansion, while the creation of a specific area worked in favor of its diversification, in a context of cultural consumption transformation and crisis. The methodology that guides this essay is the prospect and bibliographical analysis, and the overall analysis of the cuantitative samples carried out by the institution and by researchers. Según el Sistema de Información Cultural de la Argentina, antes de la crisis del Covid-19, los públicos de teatro de nuestro país se redujeron en un 40% en los últimos años. El objetivo de este artículo es problematizar el vínculo entre las políticas culturales estatales para el teatro y sus públicos. Para ello, analizamos la composición, entre 2006 y 2019, de los públicos del Teatro Nacional Cervantes (TNC). La descripción de los modelos de desarrollo de públicos implementados en Latinoamérica (Vergara 2019), de las principales tendencias de los consumos culturales así como de los datos sobre públicos teatrales en nuestro país, nos permite caracterizar y comparar dos gestiones diferenciadas del TNC y describir el trabajo del área de Gestión de Públicos, inédita en nuestro país. Descubrimos que la primer gestión abrazó uno de los lineamientos propuestos por el modelo de la formación de públicos, su ampliación, mientras que la creación de un área específica trabajó a favor de su diversificación, en un contexto de transformación de los consumos culturales y de crisis. La metodología que guía este artículo es el relevamiento y análisis bibliográfico y el análisis de muestreos cuantitativos realizados por la institución y por investigadoras.
