description This article aims to carry out an approach around the work of the Ecuadorian sociologist Agustín Cueva (1937-1992). In that sense, the purpose in these pages is to investigate a particular aspect of such work: the articles and books developed in the context of the eighties, when there is a process that the author himself calls "social democratization" of Latin American social sciences. This article aims to analyze the balance that Cueva´s works in the eighties left in the matter of political theory, in counterpoint with the approach of other authors of that period. For this, we focus on a reading of the main works of Cueva in the mentioned decade, focusing on three central concepts in the Latin American debate of the eighties: State, hegemony and democracy. Through the questions made by Cueva to other intellectuals who were his contemporaries, we try to recover some aspects that we consider important for the development of Latin American political theory today.
