description In arid regions the urbanization, such as the Metropolitan Area of Mendoza, implies inequalities in the access to scarce water. In the Mendoza River’s basin there are several studies that analyze the inequalities between irrigated and non-irrigated lands, however, it has not been investigated in depth in urban areas. For this reason, this article is focus on the strategies for access to water for domestic and residential use in the urban area, from the perspective of Urban Political Ecology. For this purpose, this study aims to analyze three different types of urbanization (gated communities, social housing and slums) and the urban water management. This will be analyzed by carrying out a documentary analysis of regulations, plans and newspaper articles about the urbanization, as well as statistical information and interviews. It has been found that the State acts as a facilitator of the advance of real estate developments and that scarcity does not affect all inhabitants equally. On the one hand some gated communities have problems of water excess and on the other hand the slums do not have access to water in sufficient quantity and quality.
