Concept of Form of State: From the Parisian Regulation Theory to Jessop’s contribution

The Regulation Theory (RT) recognizes Marxism as one of its sources, yet it develops its own conceptual scheme, which includes the notion of "form of state"- an institutional mechanism within the mode of regulation of a capitalist economy. Now then, what is the meaning of this concept? How...

description The Regulation Theory (RT) recognizes Marxism as one of its sources, yet it develops its own conceptual scheme, which includes the notion of "form of state"- an institutional mechanism within the mode of regulation of a capitalist economy. Now then, what is the meaning of this concept? How can this be applied to a political analysis? The development of this notion was tracked by Robert Jessop, who made his contribution through the Relational-Strategic Approach (RSA). This allows for a dynamic analysis of the state apparatus and proposes a research agenda that enables the regulation approaches to be applied to the studies of the state. The purpose of this article is to present the basic conceptual categories of the Parisian RT and Jessop’s RSA, emphasizing their complementarity and the possibility of their use in a kind of research that aims at a dialectical understanding of politics and economics. With the aim of contributing to the theoretical studies on the state, its power and its organizations, secondary sources have been consulted, as well as the authors’ original bibliography and other academic resources.
