Sumario:The objective of this paper is to recognize the relationship between tourism and Afro-descendant regions in order to contribute to the construction of Afro-tourism (AT). AT is an emerging concept that has arisen from the incorporation of Afro-descendant regions in the tourism dynamics. Although AT is not new, the conceptualization is, since it highlights Afro cultural and social manifestations as a tourist experience, which in turn is a means of recognition and visibility in the communities for their local development. The research was conducted under the qualitative method, with a descriptive and exploratory approach to recognize those concepts and ideas that allow understanding the construct of this tourism and relate it to the selected populations in Veracruz, Mexico. The results show that this type of tourism is little explored in Mexico and that in the Afro-Veracruz regions, due to their Afro identity and tourism potential, AT can be implemented based on their dynamics and reality, and that there are actions and forms of tourism focused on this population but that it is necessary to align it with local and institutional development to strengthen the practice, with the challenge that it does not become extractivist and that it focuses on the dignity of the population.
