AT is an emerging concept that has arisen from the incorporation of Afro-descendant regions in the tourism dynamics. Although AT is not new, the conceptualization is, since it highlights Afro cultural and social manifestations as a tourist experience, which in turn is a means of recognition and visibility in the communities for their local development. The research was conducted under the qualitative method, with a descriptive and exploratory approach to recognize those concepts and ideas that allow understanding the construct of this tourism and relate it to the selected populations in Veracruz, Mexico. The results show that this type of tourism is little explored in Mexico and that in the Afro-Veracruz regions, due to their Afro identity and tourism potential, AT can be implemented based on their dynamics and reality, and that there are actions and forms of tourism focused on this population but that it is necessary to align it with local and institutional development to strengthen the practice, with the challenge that it does not become extractivist and that it focuses on the dignity of the population. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo reconocer la relación turismo – regiones afro para contribuir a la construcción del Afroturismo (AT). El AT es un concepto emergente que ha surgido a partir de la incorporación de las regiones afrodescendientes en la dinámica turística. Si bien el AT no es nuevo, la conceptualización si, ya que en este se resaltan las manifestaciones afro culturales y sociales como una experiencia turística, a su vez siendo un medio de reconocimiento y visibilización en las comunidades para su desarrollo local. La investigación se realizó bajo el método cualitativo, con enfoque descriptivo y de tipo exploratorio para reconocer aquellos conceptos e ideas que permiten comprender el constructo de este tipo de turismo y relacionarlo con las poblaciones seleccionadas en Veracruz, México. Los resultados muestran que en México es poco explorado este tipo de turismo y que, en las regiones afroveracruzanas, por su identidad afro y su potencialidad turística, se puede implementar el AT basado en su dinámica y su realidad, y que existen acciones y formas de un turismo enfocado en esta población pero que falta alinearlo a un desarrollo local y de índole institucional para fortalecer la práctica, con el reto que no se vuelva extractivista y que se enfoque en la dignificación de la población.
