The study, the first to address the issue of prostitution in the city from a gender perspective, was carried out over two years and used an ethnographic method and a qualitative approach. The preferred technique for gathering information was in-depth interviews with the women who practiced prostitution in Cuenca. The results show that the stigma of the prostitute is created through the construction of imaginaries, the production of discourses, the delimitation and the gendering of spaces as well as the control over women's bodies and the exercise of their sexuality, whereby stigma becomes a social regulator. El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar desde una perspectiva de género, el proceso de construcción del estigma social de la prostituta en la ciudad de Cuenca-Ecuador, sus efectos diferenciados en la vida de las mujeres y los mecanismos de resistencia utilizados por ellas para aminorarlo o contrarrestarlo. El estudio, el primero que aborda el tema de la prostitución en la ciudad desde una perspectiva de género, se desarrolló durante dos años y utilizó un método etnográfico y un enfoque cualitativo, siendo la entrevista a profundidad a las mujeres que ejercían la prostitución en Cuenca, la técnica privilegiada de recopilación de información. Sus resultados evidencian que el estigma de la prostituta se crea a través de la construcción de imaginarios, la producción de discursos, la delimitación y generización de los espacios así como el control sobre los cuerpos de las mujeres y el ejercicio de su sexualidad, por lo cual, el estigma se convierte en un ordenador social.
