Exploring the archives may throw light into the attitudes and thoughts they share. The article revisits Poet in New York, the letters that Lorca wrote to his family at the time he started composing the book, and the Conference about it; the article revisits also Thomas Merton’s autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain and some of his letters about New York City. By comparing both authors’ texts, it is possible to notice their common attitude towards the metropolis and the contrast they set between it and Cuba. Este artículo busca comprender la conexión que el norteamericano Thomas Merton siente con el poeta español Federico García Lorca, a partir de la relación de ambos con la ciudad de Nueva York. Volver a los archivos puede iluminar aspectos, actitudes, consideraciones que ambos comparten en su apreciación de Nueva York. El artículo repasa el poemario Poeta en Nueva York, las cartas que Lorca escribió a su familia en la época en que empezó a componer el libro y la Conferencia sobre el mismo; repasa también la autobiografía The Seven Storey Mountain de Thomas Merton y algunas de sus cartas sobre Nueva York. De la comparación de los textos de ambos autores se desprende una actitud común ante la gran ciudad, a la vez que el contraste que los dos poetas establecen entre la metrópolis y Cuba.
