description The aim of this paper is to assess the contributions of the research carried out by Salvador Canals Frau on the Huarpe languages Millcayac and Allentiac. Three articles by Canals Frau (1940, 1941, 1942) are analyzed in which different aspects of the Huarpe languages are treated, based on the vocabulary of the Allentiac language and part of the Christian Doctrine, a work in the Millcayac language by the Jesuit Luis de Valdivia, whose work was written in these two languages and printed in 1607. In addition, studies dealing with the languages described by the missionary are addressed and the background is given of the recent discovery of an original copy of Valdivia's books. The methodology used is that of Linguistic Historiography, specifically, missionary linguistics. In the final reflections, the importance of Valdivia’s (1607) work is stressed, as it is the only vestige of sixteenth-century Cuyo languages. Moreover, we highlight the importance of the work of Canals Frau on the Millcayac and Allentiac languages.
