The research question is what are the main characteristics of these notions of ethnic identity in the spoken behavior of these indigenous intellectuals? Two hypotheses are suggested: 1) that they are notions managed by these intellectuals, and 2) that they are meanings produced by this indigenous intelligentsia. The investigation contemplates twelve oral testimonies of Aymara intellectuals. The main results report that indigenous discourses present a set of ethnic identity models that oscillate between their own conceptual production and the reproduction of foreign ideas. It is concluded that the registered models account for notions similar to those ascribed to Western thought, such as those of “culture”, “tradition” and “nation”. El artículo analiza los modelos de identidad étnica presentes en el lenguaje oral de intelectuales aimaras del extremo norte de Chile. La pregunta de investigación es ¿cuáles son las principales características de estas nociones de identidad étnica en el comportamiento hablado de estos intelectuales indígenas? Se sugieren dos hipótesis: 1) que son nociones administradas por estos intelectuales, y 2) que son acepciones producidas por esta intelectualidad indígena. La investigación contempla doce testimonios orales de intelectuales aimaras. Los principales resultados informan que los discursos indígenas presentan un conjunto de modelos de identidad étnica que oscilan entre la producción conceptual propia y la reproducción de ideas ajenas. Se concluye que los modelos registrados dan cuenta de nociones semejantes a los adscritos al pensamiento occidental, como las de “cultura”, “tradición” y “nación”. O artigo analisa os modelos de identidade étnica presentes na língua falada por intelectuais aymaras do extremo norte do Chile. A questão da pesquisa é: quais são as principais características dessas noções de identidade étnica no comportamento falado desses intelectuais indígenas? Duas hipóteses são sugeridas: 1) que são noções administradas por esses intelectuais, e 2) que são significados produzidos por essa intelligentsia indígena. A pesquisa inclui doze testemunhos orais de intelectuais aymaras. Os principais resultados mostram que os discursos indígenas apresentam um conjunto de modelos de identidade étnica que oscilam entre sua própria produção conceitual e a reprodução de idéias estrangeiras.
