description The paper presents a reflection on the current potential of archaeological assemblages and especially the collections of museums for archaeological research. It is based on a concrete example, the diagnosis made in 2012 by the LAPPU team in the Regional Museum of Rocha Milton de los Santos in relation to the archaeological and heritage research in the Protected Area Laguna de Rocha (Oriental Republic of Uruguay) to make some theoretical considerations. The objective is to provide insights that can be taken into account in the future for the definition of management actions, conservation measures and the development of musealization strategies for these collections. We understand that as long as archaeological interventions are continued and scientific collections are created, it is necessary, at the same time, to continuously analyze within archaeology the role they play in the construction of heritage and in the conformation of the collections and discourses within the museums.
