This article aims to rebuild the conditions upon which the ILET emerged and developed from 1975 to 1984. It intends to do so by taking an Intellectual History and Sociology of Culture perspective and by following the path of a group of specialists that were part of the Division of Communication and Development of the Institute, namely Juan Somavía, Fernando Reyes Matta, Héctor Schmucler, Nicolás Casullo, and Alcira Argumedo. In the period mentioned above, the ILET became an endorsed voice in the global debate for a new information order. Indeed, these intellectuals took part in esfera pública internacional popular de la comunicación and built transnational networks of discussion and theoretical production, making the ILET a Latin American cultural formation. Furthermore, the trajectory of ILET´s intellectuals allows reconstructing a chapter of a broader history of Communication Studies in Latin America and of the Latin American Lefts of the time. En la segunda mitad de la década del setenta, un grupo de exiliados sudamericanos, integrantes de la franja crítica del campo intelectual, participó en México del proceso de formación y desarrollo del Instituto Latinoamericano de Estudios Transnacionales (ILET). En este artículo nos proponemos reconstruir desde el prisma de la historia intelectual y la sociología de la cultura las condiciones de emergencia y desarrollo del ILET en el período 1975-1984, siguiendo la trayectoria de un grupo de especialistas que conformaron la división interna sobre Comunicación y Desarrollo del Instituto, entre ellos Juan Somavía, Fernando Reyes Matta, Héctor Schmucler, Nicolás Casullo y Alcira Argumedo. En el período señalado, el ILET se constituyó como una voz legitimada en el debate internacional por un nuevo orden informativo. Estos intelectuales participaron en una esfera pública internacional popular de la comunicación y construyeron redes transnacionales de discusión y producción teórica, que permiten pensar al ILET como una formación cultural latinoamericana. La trayectoria de los intelectuales en el ILET permite reconstruir un capítulo de una historia más general sobre los estudios en comunicación en América Latina y, más allá, sobre una franja intelectual de las izquierdas latinoamericanas en el período.
