These virtues should have been put into practice to train the soldiers and to build the military camp. In this article, we reflect on the concept of Military Handbook, from the new themes and research objects posed by Cultural History, in order to rethink the information collected from Onassander´s work. We emphasize the general's virtues and its application in soldiers’ daily life, in a time when the empire has reached its highest territorial extension, and when, during and after Octavian’s rule, the act of governing was reframed. Do I século d.C., chegou-nos o pouco estudado Manual Militar de Onassandro, intitulado Strategikós. Nesta obra, o autor nos apresenta apontamentos sobre as virtudes que deveriam dar forma ao caráter de um bom comandante militar, adequado ao contexto do Principado. Estas virtudes seriam postas em prática na formação dos soldados e na construção do acampamento militar. Neste artigo, buscamos refletir sobre o próprio conceito de Manual Militar, a partir dos novos temas e objetos de pesquisa impostos pela História Cultural, para repensar as informações coletadas da obra onassândrica. Enfatizamos as virtudes do general e sua aplicação no cotidiano das tropas, num momento em que o Império atingia uma de suas máximas extensões territoriais e o ato de governar se reformulava pela autarquia gerada durante e após o governo de Otávio.
