Methods: Observational cross-sectional study; data collected for the National Survey of Home Expenditure in the periods 1996-97, 2004-05, 2012-13 and 2017-18 were analyzed.  The total score and the scores for each component of Argentinian Index of Diet Quality (ICDAr, according to Spanish acronym) were estimated and a bivariate analysis was done to evaluate differences according to region, home type and income level. Results: A significant loss in food quality is observed in Argentinian homes throughout time, especially because of the greater participation of the optional consumption food group.  ICDAr went from 58.8±0.1 points in 1996-97 to 52.9±0.1 (p <0.001) in 2017-18, and only 1.7% and 0.8% of the homes reached a score higher than 80 points (p <0.001), respectively. In general, homes in Patagonia and the Metropolitan area, single-owner homes and homes with higher incomes showed worse results. Conclusions: These findings show necessary aspects to be improved regarding eating habits in Argentinian population and contribute to the planning of policies and actions towards better food quality.

Objetivo: El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la tendencia de la calidad de la alimentación en las últimas dos décadas y su relación con las características sociodemográficas de los hogares argentinos en el último periodo. Métodos: Estudio observacional y transversal, se analizaron datos recabados en la Encuesta Nacional de Gastos de los Hogares de los periodos 1996-97, 2004-05, 2012-13 y 2017-18. Se estimó el puntaje total y de cada componente del Índice de Calidad de Dieta Argentino (ICDAr) y se realizó análisis bivariado para evaluar las diferencias según región, tipo de hogar y nivel de ingreso. Resultados: Se observó una pérdida significativa de la calidad de la alimentación de los hogares argentinos a lo largo del tiempo, especialmente por la mayor participación del grupo de alimentos de consumo opcional.  El ICDAr pasó de 58,8±0,1 puntos en 1996-97 a 52,9±0,1 (p <0,001) en 2017-18, y apenas 1,7% y 0,8% de los hogares alcanzaron una puntuación mayor a 80 puntos (p <0,001), respectivamente. Métodos: Estudo observacional e transversal, foram analisados ​​os dados recolhidos na Enquete Nacional das Despesas Familiares nos períodos de 1996-97, 2004-05, 2012-13 e 2017-18. Apurou-se a pontuação total e de cada componente do Índice Argentino de Qualidade da Dieta (ICDAr) e realizou-se uma análise bivariada para avaliar as diferenças de acordo com a região, tipo de domicílio e nível de renda. Resultados: Observou-se uma perda significativa da qualidade alimentar nos domicílios argentinos ao longo do tempo, especialmente devido à maior participação do grupo de alimentos de consumo opcional. O ICDAr passou de 58,8±0,1 pontos em 1996-97 para 52,9±0,1 (p<0,001) em 2017-18, sendo que apenas 1,7% e 0,8% dos domicílios atingiram pontuação superior a 80 pontos (p<0,001), respectivamente. Em geral, os domicílios unipessoais de maior renda nas regiões Patagônica e Metropolitana apresentaram piores resultados. Conclusões: Esses resultados evidenciam os aspectos a serem melhorados na alimentação da população argentina e contribuem para o planejamento de políticas e ações em busca de uma alimentação de melhor qualidade.
