It seems that one factor that difficults the full “irruption” of women as citizens in the public sphere, are the growing violence in cities, and the ones that against women are exercised, which operate as a restriction of the rights of women to the city. The feminist theoretical contributions helped to understandhow relations of inequality between men and women are expressed in the different scales of territory, housing, neighborhood, the cities. Under the distinction made between public and private space are reinforced these asymmetries between men and women, being the body the first disputed territory to be recovered by women. Despite the progress conquered, the public spaces in cities, is still predominantly male. Under the considerations expressed, the article discusses the relationship between the right of women to the city, to a life free of violence, and local governments’ policies in this field. It interrogates as well on the differential impacts of such violence in the life of women and the obstacles that these pose in the exercise of their right to the city rights. La violencia urbana se presenta como un tema central de la agenda de gobiernos y sociedad civil. Pareciera que un factor que dificulta la “irrupción” plena de las mujeres como ciudadanas en lo público, son las crecientes violencias y las que contra éstas se ejercen, y que operan como una restricción de los derechos de las mujeres a la ciudad. Los aportes teóricos feministas contribuyeron a comprender cómo las relaciones de desigualdad entre hombres y mujeres se expresan en las diferentes escalas de territorio, la vivienda, elbarrio, las ciudades. Bajo la distinción efectuada entre espacio público y privado se refuerzan estas asimetrías entre varones y mujeres, siendo el cuerpo el primer territorio en disputa a recuperar por las mujeres. A pesar de los avances conquistados, los espacios públicos de las ciudades, sigue siendo mayoritariamente masculinos. Bajo las consideraciones expresadas, el artículo aborda las relaciones entre el derecho de las mujeres a la ciudad, a una vida libre de violencias, y las políticas de los gobiernos locales en este campo. Se interroga así sobre los impactos diferenciales de estas violencias en la vida de las mujeres y los obstáculos que éstas suponen en el ejercicio de su derecho a la ciudad.
