The objective of the article is to understand the process of emergence, growth and internationalization of La Puerta and the fruits and weaknesses of its insertion in a peripheral regional innovation system. In conceptual terms, penrosean, evolutionary and the innovation systems conceptual approaches are combined. Thus, a case study is conducted, based on interviews with key informants, among other data sources. Among the results, it stands out that the environmental conditions of La Rioja valleys, the know-how and networks developed by the management team and the links with different public and private institutions have been key to achieving the growth and internationalization process. Structural limitations are also identified, such as the costs of electricity and transportation, and the need for specific policies aimed at the provincial agricultural sector. The paper contributes to fill both an empirical and conceptual void in terms of documentation and reflection on firm trajectories in peripheral contexts. Este trabajo aborda el caso de la empresa Valle de La Puerta Sociedad Anónima, nacida en el departamento de Chilecito, provincia de La Rioja, Argentina. El objetivo del artículo es comprender el proceso de emergencia, crecimiento e internacionalización de La Puerta y los frutos y debilidades de su inserción en un sistema regional de innovación periférico. Conceptualmente, se combinan elementos penroseanos, evolucionistas y del abordaje de los sistemas de innovación. Se conduce así un estudio de caso, a partir de entrevistas dirigidas a informantes clave, entre otras fuentes de datos. Entre los resultados, se destaca que las condiciones ambientales de los valles riojanos, el know-how y redes desarrollado por el equipo directivo y los vínculos con diferentes instituciones públicas y privadas han sido claves para lograr el proceso de crecimiento e internacionalización. También se identifican limitantes estructurales como los costos de la energía eléctrica y de transporte, y la necesidad de políticas específicas orientadas al sector agrícola provincial. De esta forma, el trabajo contribuye a cubrir un vacío tanto empírico como conceptual en materia de documentación y reflexión sobre trayectorias empresariales en contextos periféricos.
