Thus, this article discusses a very common word in that social circle to refer to those that experimented the adventure of social ascent: the “advenedizo” (newcomer; parvenu). Our argument is that this term is no doubt a peyorative way of naming those that have started to have power, riches or prestige in Buenos Aires of the belle époque and refers to their lack of significant symbolic capital –which was scarce in that alluvial society (that is the lack of ancient origin). At the same time it shows traditional families withdrawal caused by the modernization process that was taking place. In this sense, this paper argues that symbolic way of building differences have and impact on social relations, and at the same time, they can be considered a manifestation of the constraint margins left by social facts to stablish such distinctions. El trabajo analiza los márgenes que el móvil escenario de la Buenos Aires del 1900 dejó a la elite tradicional para trazar distinciones sociales. Para ello se aborda una categoría muy común en ese círculo social para referirse a quienes experimentaban la aventura del ascenso: el advenedizo. El argumento es que si por un lado este término es efectivamente una manera peyorativa de nombrar a quienes comenzaban a adquirir poder, riqueza o prestigio en la Buenos Aires de la belle époque, aludiendo a la carencia de un capital de alta significación simbólica por su escasez en una sociedad aluvional (orígenes «antiguos»), al mismo tiempo descubre la retirada a que la modernización estaba confinando a las familias tradicionales. En este sentido, se plantea que las formas simbólicas de construir diferenciaciones, si efectivamente inciden en las relaciones sociales, a su vez, también pueden ser una expresión de los limitados márgenes que la realidad deja para trazar semejantes operaciones de distinción.
