This article makes a historical and epistemological tour on the conceptions of the living, therefore, of the concept that allows to materialize it, which is the living being. Biology as a scientific discipline seeks to understand everyday events and phenomena, being the question, ¿what is life?, the one that leads to the question, ¿what is a living being?, the most important in this field of science. Through a historical journey, the explanatory construction of life at different moments is described and analyzed. This description and analysis highlights the dynamic nature of science, particularly biology, showing that the understanding and explanation of living beings is an issue that, although it has been consolidated with the scientific contributions described, it is not closed or finished, for this reason, in the final part, some contributions are addressed in which the link between physics and biology is used to explain life. The conceptualization of the living in biology is done based on its characteristics, each of which corresponds to a construction process coming from the problems that science poses and solves.
