Os confessionários tupi de Araújo (1618) e de Leão (1686) são específicos em vários quesitos, como a presença de uma pergunta sobre a prática da antropofagia entre os indígenas penitentes que nos incitou a investigar o porquê dessa especificidade inexistente nos textos de Anchieta e nos confessionários tupi produzidos na Amazônia do século XVIII, principal problemática deste artigo, no qual também procuraremos demonstrar que os indígenas penitentes têm papel fundamental na elaboração das perguntas dos confessionários e não são apenas agentes passivos das perguntas dos missionários.
